Welcome to Helen Barrett Equestrian
I am a registered British Horse Society Senior Coach, British Dressage Recognised Coach and British Dressage List 4 Judge available for coaching on your own horse. I am based at Little London Farm in Northowram near Halifax, West Yorkshire where I coach private lessons and hold regular clinics. I am also happy to travel locally, to your yard, for coaching on your own horse.
Being a BHS Accredited Professional Coach and BD Recognised Coach you can be assured that you will receive correct and quality training for you and your horse. With the German Scales of Training in mind whilst I coach, I can help you achieve a harmonious and confident partnership with your horse without the need for quick fixes or gadgets!
I am fully insured and hold up to date First Aid, Safe Guarding & Protecting Children, and DBS certificates.
I also offer 5* full, schooling and holiday livery for up to 8 horses at my yard.

More about Helen Barrett
Bitten by the bug from a very early age, horses were always going to play a big part in my life. On leaving secondary education I went straight into an apprenticeship scheme to gain my BHS qualifications. I worked at various different yards to gain invaluable experience before qualifying as a BHSAI in 1999. Since passing my BHSAI I’ve progressed on to passing the BHS Senior Coach qualification (Stage 4 Teach, Lunge and Care & Stable Management) and I’m a BD Recognised Coach.
I was lucky enough to start riding lessons since a very early age. Come rain or shine, I was super keen to attend my weekly riding lesson at my local riding school. My love for dressage began in my teens with my first horse from ponies, Darcy. A quirky but lovable horse, we had lots of fun along the way, including being a successful part of “Team White Rose” at the BD Senior Inter Regionals at The College EC.
My next horse was Negro bred “Woody”, bought as an unbroken 4 year old, he was my horse of a lifetime. Super talented in the dressage arena, the judges loved him. Unfortunately, at the age of 13 I had to say a very untimely goodbye to my precious boy due to his ill health.
With lack of horse power, it was at this time that I began my journey as a British Dressage Trainee Judge. I’ve judged at lots of venues in the Yorkshire region and met lots of lovely people, both show organisers and riders, some of whom have become coaching clients of mine. Having passed the BD Judges exam in October 2022, I’m now a British Dressage List 4 Judge and I look forward to continuing to develop my judging and coaching.
As a coach I believe I am patient, supportive and encouraging. I particularly find working with nervous riders rewarding and love helping all of my riders and their horses, whatever their level, achieve their equestrian goals. I strongly believe we never stop learning and to ensure I keep up to date with new ideas and continuous progression in the equestrian world, I enjoy attending regular CPD days with the BHS and BD.
I currently own Dudley a Shire x who enjoys hacking and dressage and Hector a 2 year old Irish Draught who will be starting his education in the very near future. I have high hopes for this promising youngster, watch this space…
Please feel free to contact me to discuss your training requirements, I’ll be happy to help.
